A new daily pill could provide an easier and more comfortable way to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

The experimental medication, called Obicetrapib, underwent a clinical trial of Phase 3 at Monash University in Australia.

The trial included more than 2,500 people with an average of 65 years. All of them had diagnosed heart diseases or had genetically high cholesterol, according to a university press statement.

All participants received “maximum tolerated” doses of therapy that reduces cholesterol.

One group received obicetrapib and another group took a placebo, maintaining their existing cholesterol drugs.

After 12 weeks, participants taking the new drug showed a 32.6% reduction in LDL cholesterol and a 33.5% drop in lipoprotein (A) [Lp(a)]declared the launch.

The findings were presented last month at the Congress of the European Weherisk Society in the United Kingdom and were also published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The risk of women’s heart disease could be foreseen up to 30 years in advance with a blood test, according to the study

“We know that many people at high risk of heart attack or stroke do not achieve low -sufficiently low cholesterol levels, even in the best available treatments,” said study professor Stephen Nicholls, director of Victorian Heart Institute at the University of Monash and Victorian Hospital in Monash Health, in the statement.

“Obicetrapib offers a new promising option, not only reduced LDL cholesterol by more than 30%, but we also saw a reduction in LP (A), which is much more difficult to treat and has been linked to an increase in risk of heart disease.”

Low density lipoprotein (LDL), which is sometimes called “bad cholesterol”, is associated with negative health purposes when they are presented in high quantities.

Researchers may warn that the LDL can accumulate in the blood vessels and increase heart attack and stroke risk.

Lipoprotein (A), or LP (A), is a protein that is known that the possibilities of a heart attack are greatly increased when present at high levels in the blood.

Unlike LDL, LP (A) is an inherited risk factor that cannot be modified with healthy behaviors or medicines.

The researchers said that Obicetrapib was “well tolerated”, according to researchers.

“This could be a valuable tool in the fight against heart disease,” added Nicholls. “It is convenient, it is effective and can help close the gap for patients who have run out of options.”

The study, funded by Newamsterdam Pharma, a Netherlands -based obicetrapib developer, had some limitations, stated researchers.

For example, participants did not choose based on high LP (a), which means that the study did not determine how the drug affected the high levels of the protein.

Additionally, the study evaluated the changes in LDL levels, but did not measure the actual results of the heart attack or the stroke.

More studies are needed to follow patients for longer periods of time and to include more diverse cohorts, researchers recognized.
